Series 3 of record group RG 97-7 consists of public health publications published or collected by the Michigan Department of Public Health. Includes the Annual report of the Department of Public Health (1873-1949); Public health monthly (1906-1951); Publication reprint series (1894-1925); and Vital statistics, Michigan monthly bulletin (1897-1939). Also included is the Annual registration report of vital statistics (birth, death, marriage) which were published by the Secretary of State and cover the time period 1867-1917. Of specific interest may be the reports and publications of the Michigan Tuberculosis Association, which chronicles, in part, the fight to cure tuberculosis in Michigan. The T.B. material dates 1905 to 1977.

The State Board of Health was established by Public Act 81 of 1873. The Board was dissolved in 1919 by Public Act 146 which vested powers and duties of the Board in the State Commissioner of Health, supported by the State Health Advisory Council. The commissioner was responsible for protecting the public health and the prevention of diseases.
